<p&nbsp>
Soup is powerful food. It has the power to warm both our bodies and our souls. It makes us feel loved, cared for, cherished. No wonder that its only mention in the entire Torah appears intertwined with themes of relationship and eternal values....
So, take out that big soup pot and turn on the back burner, and I'll supply the recipes that will warm your family inside and out.

Bean and Barley soup sounds mundane, but I knew this hearty soup recipe was a winner when I came into the kitchen that first Friday night I tried it, and found one of our guests literally licking the empty pot with his finger!

We ask Him to save us, increase us, consume and destroy our enemies and give us a sweet new year.
The most recognized example of this is the dipping of apple in honey and asking that our new year be as sweet as the flavors of the succulent apple mingled with delicious honey.

	Why don’t we just come out and ask G-d for our needs? Why are specific foods necessary to punctuate our request? Clearly there is something else going on here....

Jul 31, Rosh Chodesh Av-the meatless days ahead

<img src="http://www.thekosherchannel.com/images/kotel-crack.jpg" "width="162" height="156" style="float:left;" hspace="5">
Av comes in and our simcha diminishes even further. During this period we are forced to recognize that things are not normal. Not in the way we dress, not the way we eat and not in the way we go through our days. Things are just not normal for the Jewish Nation as long as we do not have our Beis HaMikdash.

So, for this not-normal week and a half, I've gone through the pages of Cooking for The King and The Kosher Channel and brought it all together for you: Ten ideas for family fish dinners, frittatas step-by-step, and "Cook Once, Eat Twice" Recipes that save you time and money in the kitchen. I hope this helps you accomplish all you have to do during these nine days, both in the physical world and the spiritual one as well.

There is a strange phenomenon I've been watching at the shuk. Beautiful Israeli women crowd vegetable bins and climb over each other to load their agalaot (carts) with smooth, green outer-space looking vegetables I learned are fennel bulbs.
Watching this with interest, I wondered what all the fuss was about. So I set to discover what's so great about fennel. And that led me to a whole new vegetable world I'm only just beginning to explore.

I got so excited about it that I made a new video! You'll see me demonstrate two easy fennel recipes and I share some fascinating facts (at least to me) to start your foray into the vast world of cooking with fennel.

So
<a href="http://www.thekosherchannel.com/fennel.html" target=_blank"> tune in right now to The Kosher Channel and
see what's so great about fennel ~

Shlissel or Key Challah, makes the first challah after Pesach even more special. This is a well observed custom you might want to try for yourself. You can do this by slipping a key directly in the challah, by baking it in the dough or placing it in the braids as you shape. Many even shape their challah to look like a key.

Shlissel Challah is a segula, good omen, for parnassa, or livelihood. It's a very interesting custom with many sources and traditions.

But when I started looking for recipes and testing them, I realized authentic Persian recipes require authentic Persian ingredients. But those can be very hard to find.

I thought it would be so much easier to google for substitutions (& I found them!) than to negotiate unfamiliar neighborhoods in search of spices whose names I cannot even pronounce. That's the way I'm being Queen in the Kitchen this Purim.

Jan 20, Southern Comfort...food that is

Smothered Chicken Southern is akin to a traditional southern style chicken and dumplings recipe, only easier. (And it really brings out the southern mama in me, too.) It's chicken smothered in flour and baked, rather than covered in biscuit dough. Which brings to mind a deep question I'd like to ask ya'll.

Hanukkah means planning Hanukkah meals as family and friends gather to celebrate together, as always~with food! It's wonderful to have this oasis of cozy warmth and light in the middle of a cold dark winter. But we still have our mantle of daily responsibilities. How can we handle it all with a smile?

Photographed by Chayim B. Alevsky

First, remember that our dedication to family and community is a mantle of royalty. We sometimes feel a burden that keeps us from our mission in life. This IS our mission. If you run a home, you have a leadership role, and a leader must have a PLAN.
& here's your Queen of the kitchen Hanukkah plan:
