The demo runs about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I give a short intro then demo 3-4 recipes. Interspersed throughout the demo, I share my change from being an uninclined and insecure cook to cookbook author—by learning about finding meaning in the ordinary, stepping outside our comfort zone, facing hurdles, and and how to get the most out of the holiday at hand (adjusted depending the background of the women). I share cooking tips and offer health benefits of the food I am preparing. In the end, I hope women will come away energized about the important opportunities we have as Jewish women.
Most of the recipes demonstrated are pareve and gluten free or I give options for that.
My fee is $600, I pay for my travel. The organization pays for the food and supplies which usually runs $3-$4 per person for a generous tasting. Often I can schedule demos for non-conflicting groups in one city. In that case, I reduce by fee so each group pays $450 plus food and supplies. I donate one copy of each edition of Cooking for the King and one “Queen in the Kitchen” apron for each event as raffle prizes or giveaway.
The organization may purchase discounted copies of Cooking for the King to sell at the event, and I am happy to sign books and speak with participants for as long as you like—that's my favorite part!
